New IPCC Report Assesses Mitigation Options
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has just released Working Group III's contribution to the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report. The report from Working Group III is the product of an assessment from over 230 authors from around the world. It discusses what can be done to mitigate the emission of anthropogenic greenhouse gases and otherwise reduce the impact of human activities on the climate system. The report covers historical emissions thus far as well as the paths of future emissions, and what would be required to keep global warming under 2°C, including a discussion of regulatory, sustainable development and climate governance issues. The report finds that unless significant action is taken beyond the policies agreed to as of 2020, the median projected warming by the end of the century would be about 3.2°C above the pre-industrial period, passing the 2°C limit from the Paris Agreement that is meant to prevent the most destructive impacts of climate change.
