Salmon Climate Impacts Portal

ABOUT THIS TOOL

PCIC’s Salmon Climate Impacts Portal (SCIP) tool enables users to locate, visualize, summarise and download data describing projected changes to salmon exposure in the freshwater environment within the BC Coastal domain. The data provided is in the form of indices describing exposure to various streamflow and water temperature hazards over annual, monthly and daily time scales. The SCIP uses data produced with the VIC-GL hydrologic model that has been coupled to the dynWat streamflow and water temperature model, driven using climate model output from the fifth phase of the Couple Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) downscaled with BCCAQv2. The SCIP provides visualizations in the form of maps and regional summaries in the form of graphs. This tool is intended as a means to provide a regional overview of potential changes in salmon freshwater exposure hazards.

THIS TOOL

The SCIP allows users to:

  • Select data from six global climate models, two greenhouse gas concentration scenarios, and ten exposure indices
  • Select a specific time horizon (1971-2000, 2011-2040, 2041-2070, 2071-2100)
  • Visualize maps of gridded indices
  • Generate summary plots by region of interest
  • Select a region of interest by watershed group, salmon conservation unit or custom outlet location
  • Download summary data

INTENDED USERS

This tool is primarily designed to serve the needs of technical and scientific users who require climate change information for salmon environmental impacts and vulnerability studies. However, the tool will also be of interest to the broad range of users involved in fisheries management.
