Name:

The consortium’s legal name is the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (PCIC), formerly the Canadian Institute for Climate Studies.

Status:

PCIC was incorporated under Part II of the Canada Corporations Act as the Canadian Institute for Climate Studies on April 18, 1994 and legally changed its name to the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium in July 2008.

Location:

PCIC is headquartered at the University of Victoria (PO Box 3060 STN CSC Victoria BC V8W 3R4 Canada)

Number of Employees:

PCIC core staff includes over 15 scientific, technical and administrative positions as well as a number of visiting scientists and post-docs which vary at any given time.

Operating Concept:

PCIC is a regional climate service centre conducting needs-driven, applied research.

Scope:

PCIC scope encompasses the physical sciences that describe climate, its variability and change, including extreme weather events, within the physical environment of the Pacific and Yukon Region.

Themes:

PCIC projects and staff are organized within three theme areas: Hydrologic Impacts, Regional Climate Impacts, and Climate Analysis and Monitoring.

Products:

PCIC delivers products and services in the form of information through its website, online software tools, technical reports, corporate publications, seminars, and training.

Budget (2010-2011):

PCIC operates with financial resources of approximately $1.5 million per year.

Revenue (2010-2011):

69% base (BC government endowment); 11% BC government ministries; 10% BC Hydro and 10% other revenue

Governance:

PCIC governance is accomplished at three levels:

  • a Board of Directors that provides strategic advice and consultation as well as budgetary approval

  • a Program Advisory Committee (PAC) that reviews PCIC programs and supplies scientific and technical advice to the Director, President and CEO

  • a Director, President and CEO who oversees day-to-day operations and staffing
